Make your home 'plumbing prepared'
There are some plumbing issues that even novice handymen can fix (i.e. you!) The only catch is that you need to have a few useful tools on hand in order to get the job done. We recommend equipping your home with the following:
1. Duct tape or equivalent
This is for those emergency leaks. Duct tape, or something similar like Gorilla tape, can act as a seal to block off water until it can be fixed properly. It's important to remember this isn't a permanent solution, just a temporary fix until you can call a plumber in.
2. A plunger
There are two types of plungers that you should keep at home for any blockages that might occur. The first, a cup plunger, is best for blocked drains in the bathroom, kitchen or laundry. The second is called a Flange plunger, which is better for clearing toilets.
3. A plumber's snake
A plumber's snake (or drain snake) is another useful tool when it comes to clogged drains. It's an flexible metal cable with a small uncoiled spring on the end and can be used to clear away obstructions in piping.
4. Pipe wrench
This is a very handy tool and can be used to tighten or loosen parts of your plumbing system that are too difficult to grip with regular tools. They're commonly used on pipes - hence the name!
5. Adjustable wrench
This type of wrench is multi-functional. It's mostly used to tighten and loosen all kinds of nuts and bolts. You may already have one of these hiding away somewhere.
